The most common question I am asked by a new player is how much money do I need to play poker. I tell them don't put in any more than you can afford to lose and NEVER play with your rent money. Most new players if they follow my basic guidelines can put in as little as $20 and play at .05-.10 limits for a long time. See the Monthly Special to see how you can get free cash to start playing today.
One thing to keep in mind is that you will lose some money. You may win big some days and lose others. The only difference between a losing player and a winning player is the winning player maximizes his winnings and minimizes his losses. As Kenny Rogers sang. "You gotta know when to holdem and know when to foldem" Hanging on to losing hands will quickly empty your bank roll. Keep your drawing odds, pot odds and implied odds and other strategies in mind with every hand you play. If you don't have the odds get out of the hand or you will lose money.
To handle these fluctuations your poker bankroll should be at least 50 times the big bet but should probably be around 150 to 200 times the big bet. As you move up in limits you will need a bigger poker bankroll. Generally speaking the higher the stakes the tougher the competition.
Always follow a bankroll strategy!!
